Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This page provides answers to common questions about using VA education benefits and Military Tuition Assistance at Kennesaw State University. You will find guidance on eligibility, enrollment certification, payments, and important responsibilities to help you successfully use your benefits each semester.
-
What benefit am I eligible for? How do I get started?
Please contact the VA at 1-888-442-4551 regarding eligibility. Visit the VA’s website to review benefit eligibility and apply online for VA education benefits.
Please review our “How To” information to begin benefits at KSU.
-
How does my benefit work? What payments will I receive from the VA?
Please review the Benefit Review Information for your benefit chapter.
VA education benefit rates can be viewed on the VA website.
-
Do I have to submit my documents every semester?
Your VA-issued Certificate of Eligibility only needs to be submitted once, unless you change benefit type. If required, you will be prompted to upload your COE during the online benefits request process.
You will need to submit an online Benefits Request every semester you wish to use your benefits.
-
How do I submit a Benefits Request?
Please review our “How To” information for the link to the online Benefits Request.
-
When should I submit online Benefits Request?
Submit your online Benefits Request once you have registered for classes and do not anticipate any schedule changes. This is to help ensure that your first VA payment is accurate and prompt. *
Please review the Priority Dates & Deadlines for submission.
Ch. 33 Post 9/11 and Ch. 31 VR&E students: Submit at least two weeks prior to the start of the term for the benefit to be applied to your student account in advance of the payment deadline. Otherwise, please be prepared to pay all tuition and fees by the payment deadline.
*VA processing times vary and may be delayed even if no schedule changes are made; however, changes will often cause additional delays for VA payments.
-
Can I still submit my online Benefits Request after the posted deadlines for submission?
Yes, School Certifying Officials will process late benefits requests in the order received; however, please be aware that VA payments will be delayed. Please refer to the Dates & Deadlines posted on our website.
-
How do I know if my online Benefits Request has been processed and my enrollment certified to the VA?
You will receive a status notification on your VA Student Dashboard. We will also alert you of any issues with your certification via KSU student email.
-
Will the VA pay for courses outside of my degree-program(s) or courses that I want to repeat for a better grade?
No. The VA will not pay benefits towards courses that are not required for your degree. All coursework must meet degree requirements for it to be certified to the VA as part of your enrollment.
Repeated courses can only be certified as part of your enrollment if the repeat is required for you to progress in your degree program. Meaning, you have not already earned a degree-satisfying grade or, when applicable, you have not met the GPA requirement for your specific program (ex: Coles College Sophomore GPA Requirement, Engineering Standing Requirement, etc.).
-
I submitted my online Benefits Request but have since made changes to my schedule, what do I do now?
Check your Degree Works to ensure all changes are degree applicable and review the Full-time Hours Chart.
We will automatically review all changes during our Final Review and Certification Process after the drop/add period ends and submit any necessary changes.
Changes may result in a delayed and/or inaccurate first payment of the term. If you are overpaid by the VA based on your initial schedule, you will receive a debt letter from the VA for the overpayment once they process the change.
-
I am a full-time student taking 12 credits, why for part of the semester is the VA only paying the ¾ rate?
The VA considers each session/term within a semester separately and pays benefits based on the dates of the term. So, for example, if you are enrolled in 9 credit hours on the 15-week session and 3 credit hours on the 7-week II session, the VA will pay the ¾ rate until the 7-week II session begins, at which point they will pay the full-time rate.
Please review the Full-Time Hours tab on our website.
-
Why am I still getting emails from the Bursar’s office that I owe a balance?
You will continue to get a bill from the school until all charges are paid.
Ch. 33 Post 9/11 and Ch. 31 VR&E students: If you have submitted your Benefits Request, once reviewed and we have certified your enrollment, the Bursar’s office will adjust your account for the expected VA payment amount. Please review your account for charges not covered by the VA (meal plans, housing on campus, parking permits, bookstore charges, etc.). Any balance is your responsibility and must be paid by the payment deadline to avoid late fees and/or schedule deletion.
Ch. 35 DEA, Ch. 1606 MGIB-SR and Ch. 30 MGIB-AD students: The VA does not pay KSU directly. You must always pay your balance by the payment deadline to avoid late fees and schedule deletion.
Please review the following areas on our website:
-
When can I expect to receive payments from the VA?
VA payments are sent out around the beginning of each month for the previous month of enrollment. Payments are prorated for partial months of enrollment.
Please call the VA Education line at 1-888-442-4551 for payment information.
-
Why haven’t I received my money from the VA this month?
There are several possible reasons:
- You have not submitted an online Benefits Request for the semester.
- You submitted your online Benefits Request late, and the VA has not processed your payment yet.
- You changed your schedule, major, or benefit after submission of your online Benefits Request and the VA has not processed the change yet.
- You have not verified your enrollment with the VA (required monthly verification for Ch. 33, Ch. 1606, and Ch. 30, and Ch. 35).
- VA processing times are taking longer than usual.
If you did submit an online Benefits Request for the semester in question, please call the VA Education line at 1-888-442-4551 for payment status.
-
How do I verify my enrollment with the VA?
Visit the VA’s website for more information.
Students using Ch. 33, Ch. 1606, Ch. 30, and Ch. 35 must verify their enrollment to the VA on the last day of each month to receive their monthly payment from the VA.
-
What if I need to withdraw from a class or classes?
Please review the Withdrawals tab on our website and/or email your designated School Certifying Official for information.
Please be aware that the VA will not pay benefits towards classes that students do not complete. Withdrawing from a class or classes will likely result in a debt to the VA and, if using Ch.33 Post 9/11, will also result in a tuition debt to KSU as determined by the VA.
The VA will also not pay benefits towards classes that students do not attend/participate through the end of the term.
-
Why am I being charged Out-of-State Tuition rates?
All students using VA education benefits are eligible for in-state tuition rates, either through reclassification from out-of-state to in-state or through an out-of-state waiver. If you are classified as out-of-state for tuition purposes as stated on your KSU acceptance letter and plan to take any on-campus courses, you must complete a tuition classification review and/or waiver application with the Tuition Classification Team.
-
How do I get an enrollment verification for CHAMPVA and/or military ID?
Visit the Office of the Registrar’s Student Resources page: Click on Enrollment Verification Request for information and instructions.
-
What if I am called to Active Duty?
If you receive military orders for an unexpected call to active duty, reassignment, or deployment, you can request a Military Withdrawal. Please email your orders to Annie Bresler at ebresler@kennesaw.edu using your KSU student email for review. Please include your KSU student ID number and any relevant details.
-
How do I use Military Tuition Assistance?
Military Tuition Assistance is a DoD benefit, not a VA education benefit.
Apply for TA through your branch portal. Once approved, email your approval document to thirdpartybilling@kennesaw.edu.
Please review the Military Tuition Assistance tab on our website for more information.
-
Do I have any months of entitlement left on my benefits?
To find out how many months of entitlement you have left, please call the VA Education line at 1-888-442-4551.
-
I am a student using Ch. 33 Post 9/11 benefits. Why does the VA say they have not been charged tuition and fees yet?
The VA requires a dual certification process with zero tuition and fees entered on the initial/early certification. The finalized tuition and fees are submitted to the VA during our Final Certification Process which occurs after the drop/add period ends. In the meantime, the Bursar’s office has applied a third-party VA contract to your student account for the expected payment amount from the VA.
Please review the Enrollment Certification Process tab on our website.
-
Are there scholarships available to veteran students? How about work-study opportunities?
Yes, please contact the MVS Office for more information.
