Four-Year Career Readiness Journey

From Nest to Next is a four-year roadmap that empowers students to take intentional steps each year at KSU. Whether exploring majors, studying abroad, gaining internships, or preparing for graduate school, Owls align their choices with future goals and leave the nest with confidence. 

First Year: Nest – Build Your Foundation

Discover your strengths and explore opportunities. 

Build a strong academic, personal, and professional foundation while connecting with Career Planning and Development. 

  • Complete Handshake profile and draft a resume. 
  • Meet with Career and Internship Advisor. 
  • Attend career workshops each semester. 
  • Get involved on campus and in the community. 
  • Strengthen time management and communication skills. 

Below are suggested checkpoints for each stage of the journey. 

  • Meet with Academic and Career Advisors. 
  • Complete Steppingblocks (career assessment tool). 
  • Attend at least two career workshops each semester. 
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. 
  • Complete 25% of degree requirements by year’s end. 

Second Year: Stretch – Explore Opportunities

Engage in leadership and applied experiences that align with future goals. 

Actively explore academic and career pathways while preparing for internships. 
  • Create Handshake account. 
  • Participate in student organizations or volunteer work. 
  • Explore study abroad and global education opportunities. 
  • Attend at least three workshops/events each semester. 
  • Maintain 2.0 GPA; complete 50% of degree requirements. 

Third Year: Soar – Apply and Grow

Gain advanced experiences and expand your professional network. 

Apply knowledge through internships, co-ops, and leadership roles. 

  • Secure a summer internship or research experience. 
  • Strengthen networking and professionalism skills. 
  • Lead in student organizations. 
  • Build resilience and adaptability. 
  • Participate in advanced career readiness programs. 
  • Secure a summer internship. 
  • Explore graduate programs or certifications. 
  • Engage in leadership roles and research opportunities. 
  • Attend monthly career readiness workshops. 
  • Maintain 2.0 GPA; complete 75% of degree requirements. 

Fourth Year: Next – Launch Your Future

Finalize your career or graduate school plans. 

Transition confidently into post-graduate success. 

  • Meet with Career and Internship Advisor. 
  • Complete graduation petition (if required). 
  • Continue internships or employment with goal of full-time offer. 
  • Apply to graduate/professional programs. 
  • Build alumni connections and lifelong networks. 
  • File graduation petition. 
  • Finalize job search or graduate school applications. 
  • Continue internships/employment with goal of full-time role. 
  • Strengthen alumni and employer connections. 
  • Maintain 2.0 GPA; complete 100% of degree requirements.
