Why ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) Matter

Many employers use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), which is software that collects, organizes, and ranks applications before a recruiter ever sees them. Think of ATS as a digital gatekeeper: it parses the content of your resume, looks for job-related keywords and experience, and helps employers filter large applicant pools.

Common ATS-related issues that can hurt your chances:
  1. Formatting that doesn’t parse correctly
    • Resumes with heavy graphics, columns, tables, text boxes, or unusual fonts can cause an ATS to misread or scramble your information. When that happens, your skills and experience may not show up properly—even if they’re strong.
  2. Missing or weak keyword alignment
    • ATS tools often prioritize resumes that include relevant terms from the job posting (skills, tools, certifications, role-specific language). If your resume doesn’t reflect those terms naturally, it may rank lower in searches.
  3. Not tailoring your resume to the role
    • Even strong resumes can get filtered out if they don’t match the employer’s criteria. Tailoring helps ensure your most relevant experiences and accomplishments are visible and prioritized.

BigResume helps you identify these issues before you apply so you can improve how your resume reads to both ATS systems and human reviewers.

How to Use BigResume

Before you begin:

Have a basic, one-page resume ready and saved on your computer. BigResume accepts common file types like PDF and Word.

  • From a desktop browser, go to https://kennesaw.biginterview.com
Create an account using your KSU email address (or log in if you already have an account).
    • Using a non-KSU email address may prevent your access from working correctly.
    • Save your username and password so you can return easily.
Once logged in, click the waffle/dots icon (app launcher) in the upper-left corner and select BigResume.
  • In BigResume, select Scan from the top navigation.
    • Choose ResumeAI (sometimes displayed as “Resume AI”).
    • Click Scan My Resume Now.
  • Under Select Scoring Guide, click the search box and choose the guide that best fits your needs and experience level (for example, a first-time resume option or an advanced option if available in your KSU account).
  • Paste in a job description for a real internship/job you’re applying for, OR select a preloaded description.
    • Including a job description improves your ATS Fit analysis and helps you see how closely your resume matches the role.
    • If you want the strongest feedback, use a job posting you truly plan to apply to.
  • Upload your resume file (PDF or Word) and click Scan Resume.
    • Scans typically take a few minutes (often 3–10 minutes).

    If your scan seems stuck:
In rare cases, the scan may appear to spin or take longer than expected. If that happens, check your KSU email (including junk/spam), as results may be delivered there.

  • Review your overall rating (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) and the category feedback (Readability, Credibility, Format, ATS Fit). Use the detailed suggestions to revise your resume.
  • You can re-scan up to five times per day while you revise.

    To re-scan:

    • Go to Scan
    • Select My Scans
    • Click the three dots next to your resume
    • Choose Scan Again

Tip for best results: Treat BigResume like a revision tool. Apply the feedback in small batches (format first, then clarity, then tailoring/keywords), then re-scan to measure improvements.

How BigResume "Grades" Your Resume

When you scan your resume, BigResume provides an overall rating of Bronze, Silver, or Gold and breaks down feedback in four key areas:
