Frequestly Asked Questions
-
What is the First Destination Survey?
- The First Destination Survey (FDS) is the national standard for tracking what graduates
are doing within six months of degree completion.
- It is administered following NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers)
guidelines, which ensures our data is comparable across every college and institution
in the country.
- At KSU, outcomes are collected through graduate self-reporting, institutional records, and validation against verifiable public platforms.

Why do we ask?
- Reporting your first destination is a Pre-Graduation Task in your Graduation Timeline,
specified by the University Registrar.
- The information is valuable to current and future students, as well as academic departments,
advisors, and parents/families of prospective students.
- Federal law requires that universities provide certain information to current and prospective students. The First Destination Report is used by the Department of Career Planning and Development to meet federal requirements for disclosure and reporting of data on “student outcomes,” specifically employment and graduate and professional school “placement” following the undergraduate degree.
What do we ask?
- First destinations of graduates including employment, continuing education, military
service, volunteering, or seeking.
- Employers, job titles, and locations
- Salary data

What do we do with the data?
- We publish and share student outcomes data, but don’t worry, your responses are confidential!
- What does that mean? It means we only publish aggregate data for majors, colleges,
and total university. We DO NOT publish individual names or sets of responses attached
to individual names.
- Data collected has nothing to do with fundraising efforts by the university. We are
not asking for money, and we do not share your information with anyone.

-
How much time does it take to complete?
- It takes under five minutes to complete the survey! The survey is administered via Handshake, so you’ll need your student email and password to login in.
|
-
I think I've already taken this survey, do I need to re-submit it?
- If your status has changed, you changed jobs, started schooling, or joined the military, please update us! If your information has stayed the same since you last filled it, out, you don't have to resubmit.
|
-
Should I complete the survey if I'm seeking a job or further education, or wait?
- Many grads are in the process of seeking employment or admission to continuing education. Tell us where you’re at in the process now. If something changes (getting accepted into graduate school or landing a job, etc.) you can update your response for up to six months after graduation!
- Updating is quick and easy, you don’t have to redo the whole survey, just the questions related to your updated situation.
|
-
Who is eligible to take the survey?
- Survey access is based on your undergraduate or graduate degree completion that you
specified in your petition to graduate as instructed by the University Registrar.
- If you are graduating in May of a given year, you’ll take the spring survey. Summer/August graduates and December or winter term grads will participate in the fall survey.
