Sacred Luke: Wildlife Veterinary Internship in Namibia

Tell us about your role.
During my Applied Learning Experience in Namibia, Africa I participated in a Wildlife Veterinary Experience focused on wildlife medicine, conservation, and research. I worked alongside Dr. Maaike, a wildlife veterinarian, as well as researchers and animal care staff. I assisted with animal health assessments, wildlife immobilization procedures, nutrition and husbandry practices, and conservation research activities.
How did KSU help you get where you are now or prepare you for the future?
KSU has helped prepare me for a career in veterinary medicine through hands‑on research, challenging coursework, and leadership opportunities. These experiences have strengthened my skills, expanded my interests, and brought me closer to achieving my goal of becoming a veterinarian.
How has KSU’s environment contributed to your success?
KSU’s supportive environment allowed me to get involved in research, leadership, and service opportunities that helped me grow academically and personally. The faculty, staff, and mentors I’ve met encouraged me to pursue new experiences and work toward my goals with confidence.
Most impactful moment at KSU and why.
One of the most impactful moments of my time at KSU was joining the leadership team within Night Owl and stepping outside my comfort zone to become a Resident Assistant. These roles challenged me to grow in confidence, leadership, and communication while giving me the opportunity to support and mentor others. Through these experiences, I learned that leadership is not just about guiding others — it’s also about helping people recognize their own potential.
How will this experience help you pursue your future career dreams?
As someone who hopes to become an exotic animal veterinarian, this experience provided valuable hands‑on exposure to wildlife health, conservation, and veterinary medicine. Working alongside professionals helped me develop practical skills and gain a deeper understanding of caring for a variety of species, making it an important step toward my future career goals.
