Success with SoTL, Education Plans, and Student Involvement

Effective scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) projects use systematic or reflective inquiry to advance student learning and teaching practices in higher education. This workshop will highlight best practices for SoTL research broadly as well as how to develop strong education plans and student involvement plans that are critical for NSF CAREER and NIH R15 & R16 proposals, respectively.

Crafting Competitive Applications for Internal Funding

The Office of Research at KSU offers a variety of internal funding mechanisms to support faculty-led research. This session will review the different tiers of funding available this year and discuss strategies for successful applications.

Leading Your Research Group Effectively

This workshop will offer practical strategies for effective team management and best practices for mentoring. We will discuss how to set expectations, delegate work based on skill level, and support individuals ranging from undergraduate students to graduate research assistants and postdoctoral researchers. We will also discuss a variety of tools, such as standard operating procedures, lab agreements, and individual development plans.

Strategies for Corporate Engagement

Cultivating and sustaining relationships with corporate partners is especially important in the current funding climate. This workshop will review key considerations and best practices for identifying potential corporate partners, understanding their needs, presenting our value proposition, navigating our KSU contracting process, and successfully managing the project.

Creating an Academic Publishing Pipeline

Academic publishing spans a variety of formats, ranging from journal articles to books and more. We will start by creating a map of all your writing projects, establish priorities aligned with goals for the upcoming academic year, and form a realistic plan to move your writing toward submission. This workshop will also discuss publishing resources and services offered by the University Libraries and the Office of Research. 

Get Going with Grants at KSU

Resources designed to support proposal development are available to KSU faculty on a SharePoint site called the Research Hub. In this workshop, we will send you on a scavenger hunt of the Research Hub, introduce KSU's processes for proposal submission, and make sure you know about federally mandated trainings required prior to proposal submission. 

Research Involving Human Subjects at KSU

Before beginning work on a research project involving human subjects, you will need approval from KSU's Institutional Review Board (IRB). We will walk you through the components of the IRB form and the approval process at KSU. Additionally, we will hear from a KSU faculty member about their personal experience working with IRB and human subjects. We will also discuss the basic logistics of securing incentives for human study subjects.
