SI Leader Qualifications

What do SI Leaders do?

Classroom Responsibilities

  • SI Leaders are expected to attend each lecture for the course that they are assigned to. SI Leaders are also expected to take notes, engage with the material, and keep up with the classs so that session content aligns with the course schedule and objectives.

  • SI Leaders will be required to introduce themselves to the class during the first lecture (First Day Speech) and are encouraged to promote their sessions during class by using D2L or by making announcements during class (with permission from the professor).
  • SI Leaders typically meet with their faculty mentors once per week (or on a regular basis determined by you and your faculty mentor) to discuss concepts that students may be struggling with, to ensure that sessions are covering the most important material, get insights from a faculty perspective, discuss ways to incentivize attendance at SI sessions, and other related topics.

  • SI Leaders should act as a model student when in the classroom. This includes being attentive during the lecture, taking notes, and engaging with the course material.

Facilitation Responsibilities

  • SI Leaders are required to design and facilitate two to three collaborative study sessions that allow students to work together, solve problems, and actively engage with the course material.

  • SI Leaders are required to submit attendance after EVERY SI Session to help support program assessment.

Professional Development Responsibilities

  • All SI Leaders, in their first semester as an SI Leader, get an opportunity to get hands-on experience in facilitating SI sessions.

SI Leaders spend the first day of our two-day training learning all about the core parts of an SI session, which include learning effective facilitation techniques, how to incorporate engaging learning activities, and how to encourage collaboration in their sessions. SI Leaders are then expected to facilitate a mock SI session using the core parts to demonstrate knowledge and abillity to be an effective SI Leader.

  • All SI Leaders are required to complete Professional Development Trainings throughout the semester. These one-hour workshops are opportunities for SI Leaders to enhance their facilitation skills and pedagogical knowledge, as well as other personal and professional development areas. These workshops are designed to be active learning opportunities with interactive components and activities, such as whole group discussions.

Three to four hours of Professional Development trainings are required of SI Leaders per semester.

  • SI Leaders are required to observe three other SI Leaders during a semester, and should expect to be observed by other SI Leaders, Team Leads, and Professional Staff during a semester.

Observations allow SI Leaders to gain different perspectives on how to best serve students and provide the opportunity to see various strategies.

  • SI Leaders are invited to participate in Team Time every month, and may meet with professional staff members on an as-needed basis to discuss strategies on effective practices for SI Leaders.

    Team Time

Team Time are monthly group meetings for SI Leaders and Team Leads to discuss important program updates, as well as bond with other team members and troubleshoot issues that have come up.
