What is Cybersecurity?

The purpose of the Bachelor of Science with a major in Cybersecurity (BS-CYBR) program is to create technologically capable, business-aware cybersecurity professionals capable of applying technical skills and the knowledge of security management to protect computerized information systems from a wide variety of threats, and to manage the risks associated with modern information technology usage. Cybersecurity is a computing-based discipline involving technology, people, information, and processes to enable assured operations. It involves the creation, operation, analysis, and testing of secure computer systems. It is an interdisciplinary course of study, including aspects of information technology, law, policy, human factors, ethics, and risk management often in the context of adversaries.

This program does not have specific admission requirements. Only admission to Kennesaw State University is required to declare this major.

      *Students cannot take both PHYS 1111/L and PHYS 2211/L nor PHYS 1112/L and PHYS 2212/L.

Registration Support for Cybersecurity Majors

Visit the KSU Advising Registration Guide for support navigating the registration portal in Owl Express and registering for classes. 

  • Begin by watching the All-In-One Video for a step-by-step overview of the registration process.

  • You must complete a brief orientation quiz brief orientation quiz at least 30 minutes prior to registering for your first eCore class to avoid a Student Attribute Restriction.

  • If the registration portal is not loading correctly, clear your cache and refresh the webpage.

    • You can contact UITS for additional tech support if needed. 

  • Having trouble registering for IT 1114/L or CSE 1321/L? You must register for the lecture and lab in the same registration transaction to avoid a prerequisite error. Follow the instructions below to do so:
    • Log in to Owl Express
    • Click the Registration tab
    • Click Register for Classes
    • Select the term you are registering for
    • Go to the Find Classes tab
    • Search for the lecture (IT 1114 or CSE 1321)
    • Click Add on your preferred available lecture (The course should now be visible in your Summary, DO NOT CLICK SUBMIT YET)
    • Click Search Again
    • Search for the lab (IT 1114L or CSE 1321L)
    • Click Add on your preferred available lab (Both the lecture and lab should now be visible in your Summary)
    • Click Submit
  • Access Degree Works. This is where you can view the courses required for your degree and what you have completed.
  • View a list of the prerequisite requirements for Cybersecurity major courses.
    • Once you’ve registered for your classes, check Degree Works to make sure all of your courses look correct. If a class is listed as “Unused” this could be a sign that you need to make adjustments to your schedule.
  • CYBR 4220 is NOT offered in the summer semester. 

Your Major Matters!

  • If your program in Degree Works says Online BS in Cybersecurity, you are eligible to register for online courses ONLY. This major allows you access to sections that are reserved for Online Learners.  
  • If your program in Degree Works says BS in Cybersecurity, you are eligible to register for on-campus and online courses. This major prohibits you from registering for sections that are reserved for Online Learners.

Recommended Course Sequence

  • Arrows indicate required prerequisite structure. Follow to ensure efficient degree progression.
  • IT 1114 MUST be taken with IT 1114L. CSE 1321 MUST be taken with CSE 1321L.  
  • IT 1114/L and CSE 1321/L should be completed in year one to avoid delaying graduation.
  • This sequence does not include all required major courses.
  • Current students should review their Degree Works profiles for a complete list of requirements.

Meeting with a Cybersecurity Advisor

  • Appointment Details

    Students have the option to schedule in-person and virtual advising appointments.

    • In-person appointments are located on the Kennesaw Campus in Kennesaw Hall suite 1314. Students must have a physical photo ID in order to meet with an advisor. Same-day appointments are not available.
    • Virtual appointments are held via Microsoft Teams. An advisor will call you on Microsoft Teams at the time of your scheduled appointment. Please be prepared to accept this call. You must turn your camera on to confirm it is you, but you are not required to keep your camera on for the entire appointment. Virtual appointments cannot be completed while driving.
      • Not sure how to log in to your KSU Microsoft Teams account? Contact the  Service Desk for additional support.

    Scheduling an Appointment

    1. Log in to EAB Navigate. The log-in is your NetID and password. The same as logging into Owl Express.
    2. Click Schedule Appointment in the top right corner.
    3. Select Advising as the type of appointment.
    4. Select Cybersecurity under the Business Advising Center as the service.
    5. Select your preferred date for the appointment. Please note that appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
    6. Select your preferred meeting type for your appointment (in person at Kennesaw Hall or virtual via Microsoft Teams).
    7. Finally, select the time that works best for you.
    8. Review and confirm your appointment details.
    • We recommend adding additional comments for your Academic Advisor to review prior to your appointment to help make your appointment as effective as possible.
    • Opt-in to receive automatic reminders about your upcoming appointment.
    • Once scheduled, a confirmation email will be sent to your KSU student email account. Review this email prior to your appointment and add the time/date to your personal calendar.

  • Students can drop in to meet with an Academic Advisor on duty for quicker advising conversations.

    • These meetings are usually no more than 10-15 minutes long.
    • Please be aware that your meeting may not be immediate, as drop-ins are first-come, first-served.
    • Upon check in, you will be added to the waitlist. The front desk staff can give you an estimated wait time.
    • Drop-ins are available in-person and virtually.
    • Drop-in advising is designed for quick questions such as withdrawing from a class or registration errors. Students wanting more in-depth advising such as changing majors, multiple semester degree plans or meeting with a specific advisor should schedule an appointment in EAB | Navigate.

  • Identify the contact information for your assigned Financial Aid Counselor (based on the first letter of your last name).

  • Cybersecurity majors should complete two different four-credit-hour lab sciences (8 credit hours total).

    *Students CANNOT complete PHYS 1111/L and PHYS 2211/L (PHYS 2211K) or PHYS 1112/L and PHYS 2212/L (PHYS 2212K).

  • Registration Time Tickets are assigned for students currently enrolled or enrolled three (3) semesters back. Assigned registration times are based on student classification, i.e. hours earned (including transfer hours, not including currently enrolled hours). Times are generally assigned one week prior to the beginning of each registration phase.

    Students can find their registration time on Owl Express by selecting the Registration tab, then selecting Prepare for Registration. Registration Time Tickets are also listed in Degree Works.
