What is Engineering Standing?

The College is committed to maintaining high academic standards, which is why undergraduate students must attain Engineering Standing before enrolling in upper division courses.

Undergraduate students must apply and be granted Engineering Standing to enroll in most upper-division engineering courses (3000-level and 4000-level). Engineering Standing ensures students have the foundational coursework and academic preparation needed to succeed in advanced coursework.

To qualify, students must maintain a minimum 2.70 GPA in the required courses for each major. GPAs are not rounded. A GPA of 2.69 does not meet the 2.70 requirement for Engineering Standing.

This page provides the Engineering Standing requirements for each major and step-by-step instructions on how to apply. Please review the requirements for your specific major and follow the application instructions closely to ensure your application can be properly reviewed.

Engineering Majors

Students pursuing an engineering major must apply for and be granted Engineering Standing before enrolling in most upper-division engineering courses. If you are pursuing an engineering major with an engineering minor, your Engineering Standing requirements are based on your engineering major.

Minors and Non-Engineering Students

Non-engineering students who wish to enroll in upper-level engineering courses to complete an engineering minor must also meet Engineering Standing requirements. These students must have the applicable course prerequisites and a 2.70 GPA in the required courses listed for non-engineering students. The requirements are different from those for engineering majors and are outlined on the application below.

STEP 1 - Check the Requirements

STEP 2 - Download and Fill in

To apply for Engineering Standing, download and complete the application for your specific major listed below. If you need Engineering Standing to pursue a minor or dual major, please complete the Engineering Standing application for non-engineering majors.

When you open the application, you will notice that it is an Excel file. You only need to complete the gray cells, which include your name, student ID number, and grades.

When entering your grades, only enter the letter gradeas seen in degreeworks, not the numerical grade. Accepted entries include:

A, B, C, D, E, F, I

If you received AP credit for a course, enter K.

STEP 3 - Formatting

When you have finished filling out the application, please rename the Excel file before sending it to your advisor for review.

Please follow this format:

    • [First Name]-[Last Name]-ESA-[Your Major]

When entering your major, do not include the word “Engineering.”

Please keep the application as an Excel file (.xlsx). Do not convert or save the application as a PDF.

  • Using Jane Doe, a Computer Engineering student, as an example, the file should be renamed:

        • Jane-Doe-ESA-Computer

STEP 4 - Emailing your Application

Once you have completed the application, email it directly to your academic advisor for review and processing. Your advisor will review the application and contact you if there are any issues or additional information is needed.

Please use the following subject line format:

[Student ID Number] [Major] Engineering Standing Application

  • If Jane Doe, a Computer Engineering student with a student ID number of 00000001, the subject line would be:

        • 00000001 Computer Engineering Standing Application
