Cloud Migration FAQs

Q: Why is KSU migrating to the cloud now?

A: Our current VMware-based hosting is tied to contracts and hardware that are aging and more expensive to maintain. Moving servers to the cloud now lets us modernize in a planned way instead of waiting for things to break or become too costly.

Q: Do we have a choice about moving to the cloud?

A: The overall decision to move off our existing VMware environment is a university-level effort. However, we will work with you on timing, testing, and details so the transition works, as best as possible, for your area.

Q: When servers are moved to the cloud, will this affect our day-to-day work?

A: Most of the work happens behind the scenes. There will be no changes to the applications or how you access the software.  However, you may experience a short, planned maintenance window and be asked to help with testing.  Our goal is to keep your day-to-day work running smoothly.

Q: What will be required from the functional teams/business units impacted by the migration?

A: Upon migration cutover to the cloud, we will need your help testing the application to ensure all components and business processes continue to function as expected.  For planning purposes, a designated contact from the functional team/business unit will be required to work with UITS to determine the best possible times for both migration and testing so we can minimize any disruptions to your operations. Your feedback is important throughout this process, so please let us know if you encounter any issues during testing or have questions.

Q: What happens if something breaks after the move?

A:  UITS Support staff will be overseeing the migration and will be available during and after the cutover.  If something doesn’t work after the migration, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Q. What will the testing schedule look like?

A:  The migrations will be scheduled in phases to minimize disruption, and the testing timeframes will vary depending upon the application.
