What is a "Starting Block"?

To help new students start strong at KSU, incoming first year students are provided the opportunity to participate in Starting Blocks.

Rather than selecting just individual classes, students choose a block of courses, allowing them to take multiple courses with other students with similar long-term interests and goals.

Starting Blocks ensures that every first-year student starts their academic pursuit on the right foot. Students will have the ability to be with familiar faces in multiple courses. Get started with the right support to help you succeed!

What Are the Benefits of Starting Blocks?

Your First KSU Schedule Made Simple!

You will be able to build your first semester at Kennesaw State University in just a couple easy steps!

You will choose:

  1. A Major Starting Block
  2. An ENGL/MATH (1001, 1111, 1113, 1179, or 1190) or ENGL/STAT 1401 Starting Block.
    • Your options will depend on your MATH placement and/or major requirements!

You can then add any additional class(es) to your schedule if it was not included in your Starting Block(s). Talk to your advisor!

What college is my major in?

AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment Credit?

If you have incoming Dual Enrollment, AP, IB, or other college-level credit, Starting Blocks may still work for you!

Are you an Honors student?

If you have been accepted into the Journey Honors College, there are limited Starting Blocks designed specifically for you.

Not all colleges offer Honors Starting Blocks. If they are available, they will be listed on the Honors Orientation website.

  • Face-to-Face: Classes meet in-person for each session.
  • Hybrid: Classes will be a combination of in-person sessions and online coursework.
  • Online-100%: 100% online courses are those courses that do not require any on-campus visits or proctored exams.
  • Online-95%: 95% online courses will have one on-campus requirement, typically an orientation or exam. A proctored exam alternative is made available for students at a geographic distance of 50 miles or more from campus.
