Department of History and Philosophy

The Department of History and Philosophy prepares students to develop sound judgment in a world defined by complexity, uncertainty, and competing information. Through the study of diverse peoples, cultures, and ideas, students learn to question assumptions, weigh competing interpretations, and communicate well-supported conclusions in writing and in person. These abilities are consistently among the most sought-after by employers because they enable graduates to analyze complex information, make thoughtful decisions, and communicate clearly and persuasively.

In a world where information is abundant and persuasive text can be generated in seconds, the ability to distinguish credible evidence from convincing rhetoric is more valuable than ever. A history degree prepares graduates for adaptable and fulfilling careers, success in graduate and professional programs, and a thoughtful engagement with civic and personal life. It cultivates habits of mind that extend far beyond any single profession. Our students leave equipped not only with knowledge of the past, but with the perspective, curiosity, and adaptability to navigate an increasingly complex future.

The world rarely presents problems with complete information or simple answers. History prepares students to work within that reality. By studying societies, institutions, and individuals across time and place, students examine how people make decisions, how beliefs and institutions shape outcomes, and why those outcomes are often more complicated than they first appear.

Historical study requires students to confront incomplete evidence, competing perspectives, and difficult questions. They learn to identify what information matters, recognize the limits of what can be known, and develop conclusions that are thoughtful, evidence-based, and open to revision. These habits of mind allow students to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence and care.

Through research, writing, internships, study abroad, and other experiential opportunities, students apply these skills beyond the classroom while building the experiences needed to demonstrate their value in professional settings.

History graduates are prepared for this reality because they have practiced investigating unfamiliar problems, evaluating competing perspectives, and developing well-supported conclusions. They know how to gather information, recognize patterns, communicate effectively, and make informed decisions when the path forward is not immediately clear.

History graduates build careers across business, law, government, education, nonprofit organizations, journalism, public history, and many other fields. They enter the workforce as researchers, analysts, educators, consultants, legislative staff, archivists, and organizational leaders. The common thread is not a particular job title, but the ability to understand complex situations, communicate ideas clearly, and make thoughtful decisions wherever their careers take them.

We offer a BA degree in History and a BS degree in History Education. You can minor in History, Philosophy, Public History, or Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. We have also partnered with the Double Owl program to offer BA degrees in History with an MBA in Business Administration, MA in American Studies, MA in Art & Design, or MPA in Public Administration and BS degrees in History Education with an MA in American Studies.
