The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Literacy Education is designed to prepare certified teachers to serve as leaders in literacy education. This program is fully approved by the GaPSC and is 100% online. The program provides candidates with knowledge and tools to advance literacy instruction for PreK-12 students. After successful completion of this degree and earning a passing score on the GACE Literacy Specialist Assessment 348, candidates will be eligible to add the Literacy Specialist field to their GaPSC certificate and upgrade all service and teaching fields held to a level 5.  All degree completers are prepared to serve as literacy specialists in grades PreK-12 and provide instructional support for teaching reading/literacy to classroom teachers and paraprofessionals. Teachers who complete this program, and hold a GaPSC teaching certification, will also receive the Dyslexia Endorsement on their GaPSC teaching certificate.

  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of proficiency in literacy instruction as defined in GaPSC Rule 505-3-.03 Foundations of Reading, Literacy, and Language. •(e.g. Cox Campus, LETRS, OG certification) 


    Proficiency may be also be demonstrated through completion of the Reading Endorsement (based on GaPSC Rule 505-3-. 96, effective July 1, 2023 or later) and/or certification in Elementary Education (earned after July 1, 2025) 

  • Students complete the 30 credit hours of coursework over a period of 4 - 5 semesters.

  • After successful completion of this degree, and earning a passing score on the GACE Literacy Specialist Assessment 348, candidates will be eligible to add the Literacy Specialist field to their GaPSC certificate and upgrade all service and teaching fields held to a level 5.
  • Yes, this program requires 3 full years of teaching experience.  
  • To become a GACE Literacy Specialist in Georgia, educators need to pass the GACE Literacy Specialist Assessment (Test #348).

Admission Requirements

The following are program-specific criteria beyond the general KSU Graduate Admissions Requirements.   To be considered for admission to this program, the following application materials must be submitted to the KSU Graduate Admissions Office:

  • Three years of teaching experience.
  • A valid level 4 or higher Induction, Professional, Advanced Professional, or Lead Professional teaching certificate, leadership certificate, service field certificate, or Life certificate are required for program admission.  
  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of proficiency in literacy instruction as defined in GaPSC Rule 505-3-.03 Foundations of Reading, Literacy, and Language.•(e.g. Cox Campus, LETRS, OG certification)
  • Resume or Vitae - Can be uploaded into the online application. Should document education, teaching experience, and your record of leadership.
