Design a Well-Informed SoTL Project

Welcome to Hopscotch-4 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning! The aim of this tool is to assist you in developing an empirical Scholarship of Teaching and Learning design.

As defined by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Kennesaw State University and drawing on Felten's (2013) recommendations, SoTL is systematic and/or reflective inquiry into student learning and/or one's own teaching practices in higher education which is situated in context and involves methodologically sound application of appropriate methods, peer review, and distribution as scholarly work.

Because SoTL is conducted by those in every discipline, it has many methodological approaches. This tool is appropriate for planning most any quantitative or qualitative-based empirical design. If your SoTL design is not empirical, you may want to seek other sources of information to assist you.

We propose users move forward with their SoTL design by following these nine steps in order. Users should note, however, that the SoTL process is not always linear and sometimes involves hopping backward and to the side, just as in the children's game, Hopscotch.

KSU faculty, staff, and students can also visit the CETL Research Lab (pictured in this interactive 360° video) to work in the Hopscotch 4-SoTL physical space. Users can capture their notes written on the wall decals with a camera-enabled device and the IRML web app. Directions for using this app are posted inside the lab.

Hopscotch 4-SoTL is affiliated with the Interactive Research Methods Lab at KSU.
