Business Administration Program Answers to FAQs
The Ph.D. in Business Administration at Coles College is an AACSB-accredited, full-time doctoral program designed for experienced professionals seeking academic careers. Students complete coursework through intensive, face-to-face residencies and progress through a cohort-based structure. The program typically takes three to four years to complete, includes five specialized concentrations, and requires a dissertation. All students begin in the Fall semester.
Program Structure & Academics
-
What concentrations are offered?
Students may choose from five concentrations: Accounting; Information Systems and Security; Management; Marketing and Sales Leadership; and Risk and Decision Analytics. The concentration structure supports faculty qualification requirements at most universities. -
Is the Program full-time or part-time, and can I keep working while in the Program?
The Ph.D. in Business Administration Program is a full-time program. However, given the structure of the Program, students are still able to maintain employment during the Program. Specifically, the Program is designed to provide full-time content during intense residencies (3 days per residency with 10 residencies per year during the first 2 years of study).
Given the level of professional experience that our students possess, leaving their current employer would not be feasible for the majority of them. We also feel that this level of experience enhances the learning environment.
-
Can I take my Ph.D. coursework online?
To ensure the highest quality content is being delivered, we feel the best method to accomplish this is in a classroom setting. Therefore Ph.D. in Business Administration courses are provided only in a face-to-face environment. -
Is the program cohort-based?
Yes. Students enter and progress through the program as part of a cohort. This structure encourages collaboration, strengthens peer and faculty engagement, and allows students across disciplines to complete core coursework together, while still receiving in-depth, discipline-specific training in their chosen concentration. -
How many students does the Ph.D. program admit into a given cohort?
Quality doctoral education takes an extensive amount of faculty resources. This includes faculty spending a number of one-on-one hours with each student during the dissertation stage of the Program. Given the amount of faculty resources required to train each student properly, the Program chooses to focus on admitting a limited number of quality students into the Program. The Program typically will have fewer than 40 active students at any given point in time across the disciplines (fewer than 10 students per discipline, on average). Typically, a given discipline will admit up to 3 or 4 students per year.
Admissions & Eligibility
-
Is a GMAT or GRE required?
No. The program does not require GMAT or GRE scores. -
Does the program require Georgia residency?
No. Students are admitted from across the United States and internationally. -
How many students are admitted each year?
The program admits a small number of students to support intensive faculty mentorship. Typically, each discipline admits 3 to 4 students per year. -
When does the application portal open, and what are the deadlines?
Applications open June 1 for the following academic year. Priority consideration is typically mid-October, with a final deadline of February 1.
Costs & Financial Considerations
-
Beyond tuition, what additional costs should students expect?
Students may incur costs for travel, lodging, meals during residencies, and dissertation-related research expenses. -
