Eliza Bentz is a fiber artist and sculptor from the barrier islands of Southeast Georgia. She works with natural, repurposed, and found materials to create fine art and objects. Her work is concerned with the intersection of craft history and industrialization and is made as a means to reclaim tactility and agency in a world concerned with consumption and convenience. She considers her craft to be a ritual of sorts, the process a repetitive meditation held within the fixed space of the woven matrix.

A Conversation with Susan Cofer, Arthur Liou, and Morgan Bennett

Join artist Susan Cofer, Dean Arthur Liou, and Morgan Bennett, Art Education student and Lead Student Docent at the Zuckerman Museum of Art, for an intimate three-way conversation exploring the rituals of creative practice, the role of process and uncertainty in making, and the continual becoming of an artist. Together, they will reflect on how sustained practice shapes not only the work we create, but who we become through making.

How can we bring works of art off the wall and into everyday life? How can our interactions with artworks foster mindfulness in a media landscape that is constantly taking our attention? How can the visual and performing arts intersect in dynamic ways that help us bridge the gap between mind and body, theory and practice?

Visiting Artist Jonathan VanDyke (Brooklyn, NY), whose installation is featured in the fall exhibition Collective Geometries, brings his decades of experience as an interdisciplinary artist and educator for this special, one-time master class. VanDyke will guide participants in playful interactions with his own artworks, providing students with support for invention, experimentation, and collaboration. A special focus will be the idea of “notation”: that is, how a map, diagram, or set of symbols can be “translated” into actions, sounds, movements, and sketches.

The workshop is appropriate for students and community members studying the visual or the performing arts, including non-majors who have shown special interest in the arts. The class will also be of special interest to those focused on interdisciplinary study, art education, and art therapy.

Please note: the workshop includes some light movement. Participants must commit to the full length of the workshop.

Join us at the Arts District for an artist lecture and hands-on workshop with David E. Peterson, exhibiting artist at the Zuckerman Museum of Art. Peterson will share insight into his creative practice, discussing how he combines color, wood, geometry, and design to create his dynamic sculptural works. The lecture will be followed by a hands-on workshop inviting participants to experiment with composition and form while learning more about Peterson’s artistic process.

Labeled as a Contemporary Minimalist, David E. Peterson (born 1979, United States) has exhibited throughout the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. He has had solo exhibitions in Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, and New York. Peterson has shown sculpture, painting, video and sound projects at The Museum of New Art Detroit, The Detroit Contemporary, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Zuckerman Museum of Art.
