Victoria Sanders is a senior majoring in criminal justice and minoring in political science. She works with the Department of Student Leadership alongside her program coordinator and advisor, Melanie Bandoo, coordinating departmental events. It was through Bandoo that she learned about the Democracy Fellows program, which sparked her interest.

“As soon as the DSL Instagram page posted [the job posting] on their Instagram, I made sure to apply,” Sanders said. “Within two weeks, I got an interview, and I was accepted for the position.”

Experience as a Democracy Fellow
Sanders said her role as a Democracy Fellow is dynamic and includes coordinating events. Her responsibilities begin with setting up for the upcoming events hosted by the department.

“I help create different events throughout the semester, especially during election time with my program coordinator,” Sanders said.

The Democracy Fellow program also develops activities and programming for students, ensuring the proper voting resources are available and accessible. The resources include voting guides, toolkits, motivational material, and surveys.

Highlights of the Role
Sanders said one of her favorite experiences working as a Democracy Fellow is meeting new people on campus each day.

“I love meeting different people every day on campus,” she said.

She said she enjoys learning about their skills, diverse backgrounds, and how to connect with them in different ways.

Empowering Leadership through Diversity
As a student studying criminal justice and political science, Sanders emphasized the importance of engaging students from diverse backgrounds. She explained how this mindset can benefit students who are pursuing or considering leadership roles.

For Sanders, this experience has made her a better leader and will continue to benefit her after graduation.
