Maya Bright, a senior majoring in marketing with a minor in the Cole’s Scholar program, is currently working as an events and outreach intern within the Department of Career Planning & Development.
Like many students, Bright discovered the opportunity through Handshake. With additional support from a friend who put in a good word for her, she soon went through the interviewing process, which ultimately led to her securing the position.

Future Aspirations
Working within Career Planning and Development had long been a goal for Bright, as she sought opportunities to gain experience aligned with her future aspirations of becoming an event coordinator. She also highlighted the rewarding aspects of her role.
“My favorite experience has always been working at the career fairs,” she said. These events are chances for all majors to create relationships and connect with employers.
Preparation is Crucial
Bright also offers advice to future Owls seeking on-campus employment.
“Make sure that you have a great resume,” she said, emphasizing the importance of connecting with Career Planning and Development for support and guidance. She noted the department’s positive environment and commitment to helping students succeed.
Her additional advice is to pay attention to mutual connections with hiring managers, whether through former educators, classmates, or others within a professional network.
“That way, they can vouch for you and help you get that foot in the door,” she said.
