Graduation vs. Commencement

While graduation and commencement are related, they are not the same thing. 

  • Graduation is the completion of all your degree or certificate requirements. This is what earns you your diploma and alumni status.
  • Commencement is the ceremony where we celebrate your graduation. Participating in commencement is completely optional and not required to graduate or receive your diploma.
