Academic Advising

Advisors assist you in identifying and achieving your academic, career, and personal goals. They provide academic guidance in order to keep you on track for graduation and can help connect you to campus programs and services. You are assigned an academic advisor, or advising center, based on your intended major.

We encourage you to meet with your advisor at least once each semester. Advising is not registration! You should meet with your advisor prior to the date you register for classes so you can discuss the best plan for the upcoming semester and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You are assigned an advisor based on your intended major. Exploratory/undecided students are seen by Owl Advising, and students who have a major already identified are seen by the advisors in that department. In many cases, your advisor will be viewable in DegreeWorks. You can find more advising information by visiting Academic Advising.
  • Your registration window opens based on your assigned time ticket, which you can view in Owl Express under the Registration tab. University-wide registration periods and deadlines are listed in the Academic Calendar on the Registrar’s site. For exact start dates for your class level and enrollment status (freshman, continuing student, online, etc.), check your Time Ticket Assignments page in Owl Express. Staying up to date with these tools ensures you register at the correct time each semester.
  • You can change or declare your major by logging into Owl Express and selecting the Student Records tab. From there, choose Change Major/Minor and follow the steps. After submitting your request, it will be reviewed and processed by your college. You’ll get an email once the change is complete. For more info, visit the Registrar’s site.
  • To see which classes are required for your major, log in to Degree Works through Owl Express. Degree Works shows a personalized checklist of courses you need to graduate, based on your declared major. It updates in real time and is available 24/7. Once you log in to Owl Express, go to the Student menu and select Degree Works. Your major’s worksheet will load automatically. You can also use the “What-If” tool to see how your current credits would apply to a different major. Remember, Degree Works is a helpful tool, but it doesn’t replace meeting with your academic advisor. For questions about your degree plan, it’s best to connect with your advisor. If you’re a prospective student, reach out to the academic department for major-specific information.
  • Information on financial aid, including loans, FAFSA, Hope, and Federal Work-Study opportunities, can be found online at the KSU Financial Aid site.
  • ScholarshipUniverse is KSU's one-stop shop search tool used to locate and apply for thousands of scholarship opportunities. You can log in to ScholarshipUniverse  with your NetID and password.

  • The Department of Career Planning and Development would be a great place to start. Additionally, the Counseling and Psychological Services Center conducts career and academic counseling. Finally, your advisors can help you see how your undergraduate major can lead you to many different careers.
