LEARN, SERVE, CHANGE: All About “365”

365 Days of Learning & Service invites Radow College students, faculty, and staff to engage in a year-long exploration of a critical societal issue. Now in our fifth year, the theme for our 2026-2027 academic year is housing insecurity. Through education, dialogue, special guest speaker events, video production contests, and more, participants can develop a broader understanding of the issue. Guided by the Interim Associate Dean for Student Success and a dedicated steering committee, this initiative pairs academic inquiry with real-world service opportunities.

The goal is to inspire students, faculty, and staff to go beyond research, study, and event attendance.  We encourage participants to put into practice new knowledge and engage in ongoing positive change long after the year is over, and students have graduated.

Expand your Understanding of Housing Insecurity

The biennial Point-in-Time (PIT) report on the status of housing insecurity and the unhoused in America estimates that on a single night in January there were “745,652 homeless persons in the United States.”  This was included in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s 2025 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress. While homelessness in Georgia has decreased by 0.1% since 2024, the 2025 report puts Georgia at 12,284 homeless individuals, 54.2% of whom were unsheltered. The balance of these individuals was in some form of shelter or temporary housing. The report also states that of the unhoused population in Georgia, 2,731 are categorized as families with children. Additionally, 557 are “unaccompanied” youth.

From 2007– 2025, Georgia was among the few states that have experienced an overall decrease in housing insecurity, dropping by 35.7%. Reports are careful to point out that actual numbers are presumed to be higher. This is because locating and identifying the unhoused is often difficult due to societal shame and stigma placed on the unhoused.

“The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defines unsheltered homelessness as sleeping in places not meant for human habitation such as sidewalks, abandoned buildings, bus stations, and vehicles parked for long periods. Because of the difficulty of locating people in some of these situations and differences in local capacity to conduct the unsheltered count, the actual number of unsheltered homeless persons could be larger than reported”.
