Michael J. Coles College Reveals 2026 Outstanding Students

The Michael J. Coles College of Business recently announced the recipients of the
2025-2026 Outstanding Student awards.
Outstanding Student awards recognize exemplary students in each of the College's academic
programs. Faculty members nominate students, with department chairs selecting the
winners.
Below, you will find details about each of the 19 Outstanding Student award recipients
as well as some information about each.
Here is a listing of each student and their respective programs:
Undergraduate Program Outstanding Students
Accounting: Karen Flores-Padilla
Karen Flores-Padilla is a high-achieving accounting student who will be entering the KSU MAcc program in the fall of 2026. She is an honors student, a Coles Leadership Scholar, and serves on the Coles College Student Advisory Board. In addition to her academic accomplishments and leadership, Karen serves as the President of Beta Alpha Psi Honor Society, a title she has held for two consecutive semesters. Under her leadership, membership numbers have increased by over 20%. In addition to this role, Karen is also a founding member of Women in Finance.
Cybersecurity: David Kang
David Kang has demonstrated consistent academic excellence as a recipient of the President's
List during several semesters. He also demonstrated good working ethics in the CYBR
4220 course, and performed exceptionally in the class. In addition, this student showed
a strong motivation to pursue a Cybersecurity graduate degree after completing the
undergraduate program.
Economics: Jennifer Remer
Jennifer Remer is an outstanding Economics and Finance double major who exemplifies academic excellence, deep engagement, and sustained leadership. She served as Chief Economist for the Student Managed Investment Fund, where she was responsible for developing the fund’s economic outlook, including writing the “Economic Hoots,” which guide investment strategy. Jennifer has been uniquely engaged across multiple high-impact experiential learning opportunities. She is the only SMIF student to participate simultaneously in the CFA Ethics Challenge and the CFA Research Challenge in the same year, and she was also a key member of the Federal Reserve College Fed Challenge team. Her analytical rigor, leadership, and collaborative skills have been consistently noted by faculty. Following graduation, she will complete a summer internship at Intercontinental Exchange, with a pathway to full-time employment.
Entrepreneurship: Keira Hight
Keira is an outstanding student athlete in the entrepreneurship program, holds the highest GPA, and is always engaged and “jumping" into class discussions. She also competes for KSU as a pole vaulter on the track and field team bringing the same focus and drive to both academics and athletics.
Finance: Daniel Halliday
Daniel Halliday is an exceptional Finance major who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and engagement through sustained involvement in the Student Managed Investment Fund and the Federal Reserve College Fed Challenge. He previously served as Chief Economist of SMIF, where he authored the Fall 2025 Economic Hoot, a comprehensive macroeconomic and financial market analysis that directly informed portfolio research and investment decisions. He recently served as Chief Portfolio Officer, guiding portfolio allocation decisions and leading the update of the fund’s investment policy statement. Faculty have consistently noted his role in strengthening the quality of mentorship and analytical development among SMIF analysts. His work reflects exceptional intellectual maturity, leadership, and commitment to high-impact experiential learning.
Hospitality Management: Ella Phillips
With an exemplary GPA and her service as both Vice President and President of the Hospitality Leadership Club, Ella has demonstrated remarkable initiative by increasing club membership and successfully planning and hosting several student-led corporate engagement events. She further distinguished herself by representing the University in the national Hotel Turnaround Competition. Her upcoming post-graduation role with IHG’s corporate office is a testament to the professionalism, drive, and excellence she has shown throughout her student experience.
Information Security & Assurance: R’ana Swinson
R’ana Swinson is a consistently high-performing student who demonstrates strong academic skills, professionalism, and teamwork. She reliably produces accurate and dependable work, actively contributes in group settings, and consistently meets deadlines. She takes initiative, asks thoughtful questions, and helps enhance the overall quality of team efforts. In coursework involving external clients, she engaged professionally and added meaningful value. Faculty describe her as proactive, organized, and communicative, with strong performance in coursework, while external clients praised her as an excellent team worker and contributor. Overall, her consistency and positive impact make her well-deserving of the ISA Student of the Year award.
Information Systems: Jessica Do
Jessica Do has achieved an amazing GPA while consistently demonstrating exceptional
analytical ability, intellectual curiosity, and professionalism. Their outstanding
academic performance, combined with meaningful engagement in Information Systems coursework
and initiatives, makes them a highly deserving candidate for BBA IS Student of the
Year.
Management: Jessica Okafor
Jessica Okafor has demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, sustained leadership,
and exemplary character through her roles as LEAD Ambassador President and involvement
in multiple student organizations, earning recognition for her positive impact and
commitment to excellence at KSU.
Marketing: Balmore Cruz Zepeda
Balmore Cruz Zepeda was a member of the Coles Coles Leadership Scholars Program, and
he earned a minor and certificate in the Music and Entertainment Business Program,
all while maintaining an exceptional GPA. Originally from El Salvador, Balmore is
bilingual in Spanish and brings a global perspective to his work in marketing and
leadership. He served as a marketing assistant in Campus Services at KSU, where he
created marketing content, supported event marketing and management, and managed customer
relationships. Balmore gained professional experience as a digital marketing intern
with Adgency Marketing in El Salvador and was an active member of the International
Students Association. He will continue his academic journey this fall when he joins
the Master of Science in Data Science and Analytics program.
Professional Sales: Dana Melby
Dana Melby is a Professional Sales major with an outstanding GPA. She was a Coles
College of Business Leadership Scholar, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, and a participant
in the KSU Honors Program. Dana was highly engaged as a member of the Sales Club,
the Student Sales Advisory Board, and the Coles Sales Team. She has earned certifications
in Excel, Tableau, and Pipedrive, served on the Coles College of Business Student
Advisory Board, and founded a Bible Study group, reflecting both her academic excellence
and leadership on campus. She is currently interning with EarthLink and has accepted
a full-time position with Samsara.
Graduate Program Outstanding Students
Evening MBA: Dylan Ruvebana
Dylan Ruvebana served as the MBA Programs Graduate Assistant from Spring 2025 until
Spring 2026. During his time there, Dylan went above and beyond to ensure that they
created processes and procedures to positively impact our student experience. Through
his leadership, the MBA Program has launched a student organization that will create
more opportunities for networking and collaboration. Dylan's impact goes beyond his
role in the office. In every class, Dylan has worked to build a sense of community
amongst his peers. His positive attitude and diligent work ethic inspire the MBA community.
Master of Accounting: Hannah Dimeler
Hannah Dimeler is an exceptional scholar who consistently ranked at the top of her cohort while pursuing rigorous professional milestones, including earning her Internal Audit Practitioner designation and the program’s highest CPA Exam scores. A natural leader, Hannah represented Kennesaw State at the IIA Global Student Conference and led her team to a top-ten finish in a prestigious statewide case competition. Her faculty and professional mentors commend her not only for her sharp analytical focus but for her genuine dedication to the success of her peers.
Executive MBA: Israel Brown
Founder and CEO of a $25M construction enterprise and a former Combat Engineer Officer
and Captain, Israel Brown is recognized for his exceptional ability to transform EMBA
coursework into scalable industry innovation. His academic journey is marked by the
development of a pioneering 3D-printing construction venture and a commitment to representing
the program within elite executive networks like Vistage and the Cobb CEO Group. A
dedicated community coach and ministry leader, Israel defines success through humble
stewardship of his business, his community, and his family.
Master of Science in Digital Financial Technologies: Roberto Velarde
Roberto Velarde was nominated for the Outstanding Student Award in recognition of
his exceptional dedication and service to the Fintech program. Beyond his accomplishments
as an alumnus, Roberto devoted significant time as a student to volunteering with
the program and played a central role in organizing and executing both the collegiate
Fintech Hackathon for students across Georgia and the Fintech High School Hackathon.
His leadership, initiative, and commitment were instrumental to the success of these
events. Even after graduation, Roberto continues to extend his time and support to
the program, exemplifying outstanding service and engagement.
Master of Science in Information Systems: Sean Lamothe
Sean Lamothe is a fast-track student who consistently maintained a full academic load
each semester while working full time. In addition to his classes, he travels weekly
between Atlanta and Seattle to balance professional responsibilities and family obligations.
Alongside his studies, he has built an extensive career in operations, analytics,
and product management, including leadership roles at The Home Depot focused on customer
experience, digital platforms, and operational transformation. His ability to excel
simultaneously as a student and seasoned professional reflects exceptional discipline,
resilience, and commitment.
Master of Science in Healthcare Management & Informatics: Lawrence Kumah
Lawrence Kumah has demonstrated academic excellence during his time with HMI program,
and has consistently maintained engagement throughout various activities offered by
the program. Lawrence has recently been accepted to Virginia Commonwealth University's
Doctoral Program in Health Services Organization and Research on a full-ride scholarship.
Ph.D. in Business Administration: Brad Eskridge
Brad Eskridge has been an Instructor of Marketing at Bradley University since 2011. He is a dedicated marketing educator and sales coach who has led the team to top-15 placements in the National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC) each year, including national championship victories in 2021 and 2022. His research interests include artificial intelligence in marketing and sales, sales management, and salesperson performance. In his dissertation, he explores buyers’ perceptions of AI-customer symbiosis in the sales context and its impact on future relationship intentions. He is a prolific researcher who has published several high-quality articles in journals such as Industrial Marketing Management, Business Horizons, and Marketing Intelligence & Planning.
WebMBA: Tracey Graves
Tracey Graves has a firm belief that service is the highest form of leadership. During
her time at the Coles College of Business, she has leveraged her passion for service
with the desire to learn and grow. Tracey is a Paul D. Coverdell Fellow, served as
the graduate assistant with the Aspiring Community Entrepreneurs (ACE) program, and
maintained a solid GPA in the MBA Program. Whether working with on-campus programs
or her WebMBA team, Tracey has consistently brought positivity and an eagerness to
learn. Her leadership has not only influenced her peers, but the KSU community as
a whole.
